Taiwan said its military was on high alert on Monday (Dec 9) as it launched combat readiness drills after detecting Chinese warships and coast guard vessels in waters around the island.

A senior Taiwan security official told Reuters that China currently has nearly 90 navy and coast guard ships in waters near Taiwan, the southern Japanese islands and the East and South China Seas, of which around two-thirds were navy vessels.

The exercises were also in response to Beijing's army restricting the airspace off the Chinese coast.
