United Nations Security Council Resolution 647 (1990) provides institutional backing for the Secretary-General’s good offices mission in the context of the situation in Afghanistan and the implementation of the Geneva Agreements of 14 April 1988. The Council endorses the arrangements proposed in the Secretary-General’s letter of 9 January 1990, authorizing the temporary deployment for a further two months of military officers from existing UN operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and requests to be kept informed of subsequent developments.
